It is well acknowledged that the island of Corfu is one of the main hotspots of Greece in terms of tourism. Yet, there is no tourism office as such pertaining to Corfu, which might puzzle anyone who is used to resort to such establishments at least for the first time they want to head for a certain destination. On the other hand, one can not seriously pretend that the absence of such offices owned by Corfu damages the tourist potential of the island.
One should take into consideration that the services of tourism offices are substituted for by the office of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), which is the main state entity to handle tourism related issues.
This office is able to provide useful information about the main aspects tourists are usually concerned about, such as accommodation, means of transport, main attractions and so on. In addition to this establishment, tourists may find reliable information to the small kiosks located in the main thoroughfares of Corfu Town, namely, in the San Rocco Square and in the Esplanade, the services of which are complemented by the variously called private tourist offices located in almost each significant resort of the island. These offices, besides their proper function – selling boat tickets or giving details on car hiring services – provide data about transport or restaurants, which is why they are intensely resorted to by tourists.
